Welcome to the Waterhouse Lab

The pri­mary research focus of my lab­o­ra­tory is to under­stand the role of the cen­tral monoamin­er­gic sys­tems in brain func­tion and behav­ior. More specif­i­cally we are con­cerned with the anatomy and phys­i­ol­ogy of the brain­stem nora­dren­er­gic and sero­ton­er­gic effer­ent sys­tems as they relate to executive function and the sen­sory pro­cess­ing capa­bil­i­ties of the organism.

Locus Coeruleus

Focusing on how the norepinephrine released from neurons in the locus coeuruleus influences sensory and cognitive function.

Dorsal Raphe

Studying how the brainstem dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) utilizes multiple neurotransmitter systems and heterogeneous efferent projection patterns and cellular physiology in mediating behavioral outcomes.

Psychostimulant Drug Actions

Examining the performance enhancing effects of psychostimulant drugs on sensory signal processing and executive funtion.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Ongoing studies are focusing on the effects of repeated concussive events (mild traumatic brain injury - TBI) on flexible attention and the functionality of the NE transmitter system in the brain.

As the new Chair of the Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience at GSBS, Dr. Barry Waterhouse brings his expertise and a vision to expand neuroscience research and research training on campus and in the South Jersey region. Joining him is an enthusiastic and soon-to-be expanding team of neuroscientists who will help drive this vision forward.

Graduate students remain key to the success of this enterprise as we foster the development of neuroscience research and training within the department while expanding the scope of neuroscience to other departments across the university.
